“The response we have had with the virtual format and the result of our own platform, encourage us to work from now on in the seventh edition and, as every year, confirm in the agenda the best speakers, sponsors, products and solutions”, says Ricardo Medina, CEO of Medina Media, which since 2015 organizes the main worldwide meeting on Ultra High Definition (UHD).

2021 will be an important year for the development of UHD worldwide, with the celebration of the Olympic Games in Tokyo and the European Cup, in a unique socioeconomic context worldwide since the invention of television in 1926.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that, for example, more televisions have been sold in the United States than ever before, as consumers opt for home entertainment and re-prioritize their spending due to confinement and habit changes.

The virtual format has allowed the best “speakers” in the world in fields such as content, production, manufacturing or research to come together in the virtual 4K HDR Summit.

“Their agendas often prevent them from all moving to the same place at the same time. We all miss the “face to face” networking we had achieved in Malaga, because it is so important for business. But sharing knowledge, with each other, is the main goal of the 4K HDR Summit. And this year we have achieved it again,” says Medina.

Marcos Santana, president of Telemundo Global Studios, of the Comcast NBC-Universal group, was this year’s “speaker of honor”.

Also participating in the “Presidents’ Day” were the presidents of the UHD Alliance, Michael Zink; the Ultra HD Forum, Thierry Fautier; and the 8K Association, Chris Chinnock. The three held their first joint debate with the UHD international community on the 8K, and have already committed to repeat the experience next year.

Among the 30 speakers who made up this year’s agenda were representatives from NHK (Japan), OBS (Olympic Broadcasting Services), NASA (USA), Eurovision-EU, Travel XP (India), The Explores (France), OMDIA (Great Britain), etc.

Some twenty top-level companies and multinationals have joined as sponsors of the first virtual edition of the 4K HDR Summit, such as Telemundo Global Studios (USA), Dolby (USA), Eutelsat (France), Sony (Japan), Samsung (Korea), Mediakind (USA/Sweden), Ateme (France), Ross (Canada), Appear TV (Norway), Canon (Japan), Nokia (Finland), Rohde & Schwarz (Germany), Fraunhofer (Germany) and Vestel (Turkey).

On the Spanish side, Cellnex, Axión, RTVA, Hispasat and institutions such as UHD Spain, Europa Creativa Media Desk Andalucía and the Diputación de Málaga, with its brand Málaga de Moda “Talento Original”, also participated as sponsors.

The sixth edition of the 4KHDR Summit offered a final section dedicated to the nascent association UHD Spain, in which the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, RTVE, Cellnex, Hispasat, Canon, Mediapro, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and Medina Media 4K took part, within the group of promoters of Ultra High Definition in Spain, which invited all those companies and professionals based in Spain interested in 4K to join.

The week of 4K at international level ended on Friday 20th November with the virtual ceremony of awards and projection of the winning short films of Málaga 4K Fest 2020, organized by Medina Media Events, in collaboration with Festival de Málaga, to which 324 short films from 35 countries of the 5 continents have been presented.

The short film “Mateoren Ama” (“La madre de Mateo”), directed by Aitor Arregui and Jose Mari Goenaga, also directors of the Spanish film candidate to the Oscars “La Trinchera Infinita”, has been the great winner of this edition of the Malaga 4K Fest, having won the main award of the festival, the ADM Group Award to the best short film, and the Medina Media 4K Award to the best director.
